Akhilesh Yadav is an Indian politician and a member of the Samajwadi Party. He was appointed as the Chief Minister of the state of Uttar Pradesh in 2012,at which time he was the youngest person to have assumed that office.

Akhilesh Yadav was born to Mulayam Singh Yadav and Malti Devi on 1 July 1973 in Safai village, Etawah district, Uttar Pradesh. He studied at Dholpur Military School in Dholpur,Rajasthan and subsequently was awarded a degree in environmental engineering while studying in Mysore in University of Mysore. He went to Australia to study for a master’s degree in the same subject in Universiyty of Sydney.Akhilesh gives credit to Janeshwar Mishra who initiated him to join politics.

Yadav was elected to the Lok Sabha from Kannauj in a by-election of 2000 and retained his seat in the 2004 and 2009 general elections. He was credited for assisting the party’s rise from having 97 seats in 2007 Vidhan Sabha to a total of 224 and was subsequently elected the 20th Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh by the party’s MLAs.He was at that time the youngest person to have held that office, being 38 years old. There have been suggestions that his government is in fact driven by his father behind the scenes. In July 2012,Yadav’s father, who is the president of the Samajwadi Party, addressed government ministers and criticised the progress made during their first four months in office. After becoming the Chief Minister of UP, he undertook many tasks for the welfare of people. He distributed laptops and study equipments to students and various items to the needy.

His government faced public  outrage and criticism from other political parties during the Durga Shakti Nagpal case, where an Indian Administrative Services(IAS) officer was sacked by his government because she ordered the demolition of an illegal mosque wall;her suspension was revoked after two months. The 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots in 27 August 2013,where 43 people died and 93 injured, due to communal clashes between Muslim and Jat communities, was another serious setback to his government where a curfew had to be called.

He is married to Dimple Yadav. The couple has 3 children.
