Popularly known as “Wazza” by the fans, Wayne Rooney is arguably the finest English player of his generation. Making his professional debut in 2002 at 16 by joining the youth team of Everton but there is no doubt Rooney is still considered among the best in the world. Powerful and strong on the ball, Rooney's ability to pick a pass, shoot from distance and unselfishly work for the team is unparalleled in world football. He plays as a forward for the Manchester United and the England national team.

Three-time World Player of the Year Lionel Messi praises Rooney's passion as  "We all know football players at the top level are blessed with high wages, it's no secret. But Rooney would play for 100 euros-a-week. You can see the fire in his eyes. It's that fire which makes him the best of the best."

Making his way through the Everton, Rooney shot to the world's attention with a stunning goal against Arsenal in 2002 and showed skill beyond his years before Manchester United signed him for around 30 million pounds after the 2004 European Championship in which he had played a starring role. Rooney made his senior international debut in February 2003 aged 17, becoming the youngest player to represent England.  He is also England's youngest ever goalscorer.  He has won the England Player of the Year award twice, in 2008 and 2009. As of June 2014, he has won 91 international caps and scored 39 goals, making him
England's fifth highest goalscorer.

On 14 November 2009, Rooney captained England for the first time in a pre-tournament friendly with Brazil. Rooney was also the fifth highest-paid player in the world, with an annual income of $32.6 million in March 2012. After scoring four goals in four matches, Rooney was named in UEFA's Team of the Tournament.

After his biography “My story so far”, Everton manager David Moyes sued Rooney for libel after the tabloid newspaper the Daily Mail published excerpts from it. Rooney also faced criticism from the English media after team’s poor performances; Fabio Capello said Rooney "only plays well in Manchester". However, on 12 October 2012, Rooney became England's 5th highest goalscorer of all time after scoring his 30th and 31st international goals in a 2014 World Cup qualifier against San Marino.
