NAMO!NAMO!NAMO!...Everybody in India and outside is talking about this name.Be it media, politicians or voters. The man who developed and industrialised the state of Gujarat beyond admiration.Yes this man is Narendra Modi…Narendra Damodardas Modi.

Born to a family of grocers in Vadnagar in Mehsana district of Gujarat,India. He was the third of six children born to Damodardas Mulchand Modi and his wife Heeraben. As a child,he helped his father sell tea at the Vadnagar railway station and on trains. As a teenager,Modi ran a tea stall with his brother near a bus terminus. He completed his schooling in Vadnagar, wher a teacher described him as an average student but a keen debater.Modi was a fan of Rajesh Khanna. He began work in the staff canteen of Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation. He worked there until he became a full time campaigner of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh(RSS).He was given charge of Sangh’s student wing,Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad(ABVP),in Gujarat.
During his years in RSS he came in touch with Vasant Gajendragadkar and Nathalal Jaghda, leaders of Jan Sangh.Modi remained a campaigner in the RSS while he completed his Master’s degree in political science from Gujarat University. The RSS assigned Modi to BJP in 1985.While Keshubhai Patel and Shankarsingh Vaghela were established names in Gujarat BJP at that time,Modi rose to prominence after organising Murili Manohar Joshi’s Ekta Yatra. His electoral strategy was central to BJP’s victory in the 1995 state elections.Modi became general secretary of the BJP and was transferred to New Delhi for the party’s activities in Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. After Vaghela, who had threatened to break away from BJP in 1995,defected from the BJP after he lost the 1996 Lok Sabha elections,Modi was promoted to the post of National Secretary of the BJP in 1998.While selecting candidate for the 1998 state elections in Gujarat,Modi favoured people who were loyal to Patel over those who were loyal to Vaghela, helping to put an end to the factional divisions within the party. His strategies were credited as being key to winning the 1998 elections.
In 2001,Keshubhai Patel’s health was falling, and the BJP had lost seats in the by-elections.Allegations of abuse of power, corruption and poor administration were being made ,and Patel’s standing had been damaged by his administration’s handling of the Bhuj Earthquake of 2001.As a result,BJP’s national leadership sought a new candidate for the office of chief minister, and Modi, who had aired his misgivings about Patel’s administration, was chosen as a replacement.L.K. Advani,a senior leader of BJP,however, did not want to ostracise Patel and was worried about Modi’s lack of experience in governance. However,Modi declined an offer to be Patel’s deputy chief minister, informing Advani and Atal Bihari Vajpayee that he was “going to be fully responsible for Gujarat or not at all”,and on & October 2001,Modi was appointed the Chief Minister of Gujarat.

In July 2007,he became the longest serving Chief Minister in Gujarat’s history,at which point he had been in power for 2063 days continuously. He is currently serving his fourth consecutive term as Chief Minister.Modi is a member of RSS and is described as a Hindu nationalist by media, scholars and himself. He is a controversial figure both in India and Internationally. His administration has been criticised for the instincts surrounding the 2002 Gujarat violence. He has been praised for his economic policies, which are credited with creating an environment for a high rate of economic growth in Gujarat. However, his administration has also been criticised for failing to make a significant positive impact upon the human development of the state.

The leader of the young generation of India, role model of many who want to take on politics, Rahul Gandhi is the chairperson of the Indian Youth Congress and the vice-president of Indian National Congress. 43 years of age, he comes from the political family of “The Gandhis”. His father late Rajiv Gandhi served as the Prime Minister of India and his mother Sonia Gandhi is the current President of Indian National Congress.

Rahul Gandhi early stints in politics include contesting in May 2004 from his father’s
former constituency Amethi in Uttar Pradesh. His presence in the Congress has lead to emerging of young leaders like Arun Yadav and Sachin Pilot. Congress portrays him as a symbol to attract young voter banks as the youth is considered the backbone of any nation. He also mentioned that he would reduce the caste and religious issues prominent in the country. Some people supported him for the prime ministerial candidature from Congress against BJP’s Narendra Modi who holds a strong position as far as centre is concerned.

He also faced criticism over his language as his opponent party BJP’s spokesperson once said that his language was a bigger threat to India, dividing the people of the country on communal ground when he remarked that there was evidence of some support for the group among certain elements in India's indigenous Muslim population. After the 2011 Mumbai attacks, he said "It is very difficult to stop every single terrorist attack. The idea is that we have to fight terrorism at the local level. We have improved in leaps and bounds. But terrorism is something that it is impossible to stop all the time.” After this, Congress had to face the questions regarding the national security.

After the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots
, he was highly criticized for his comments of recruitment of riot affected youth by Pakistan’s ISI, the BJP also asked the government to explain why he is being briefed by intelligence officers on important security issues although he holds no post in the government. At a function in Allahabad, he got sharp criticism when he termed poverty as a state of mind.

The “new kid” in the Indian politics, who created a tussle in politics in order to give a whole new meaning to the administration with his newly formed national political party named Aam Aadmi Party (AAP, which means “You” in Hindi), Aam Aadmi means “common man”, so that they could connect to the masses easily and solve a problem of corruption in India. Launching the party on 26 November 2012, he soon became the Chief Minister of Delhi on 28 December 2013.

Arvind Kejriwal started his career as an IITian but soon he cleared Civil Services Examination and worked for Indian Revenue Services (IRS) as a Joint Commissioner in the Income Tax Department. But he soon resigned as started his NGO. In 2006, he got the Ramon Magsaysay Award as a token of his works. But he is known widely for his efforts to enact the Right To Information Act at the initial level and for his commendable efforts in drafting a proposed Jan Lokpal Bill together with Anna Hazare and his team.

With his efforts, he also protested against the corruption, and fasted with his team at Jantar Mantar, due to which he was also arrested, which ultimately led to formation of AAP. Formation of party led to differences between him and Anna Hazare and they separated their ways as Anna said that his main motive was to fight against corruption and not contesting for elections. They openly protested against the Congress Government and acted as a whistleblower against the scams, corruption prevailing at the centre. He defeated former Chief Minister Shiela Dixit and AAP winning 28 of 70 seats. On 14 February he resigned from his post after failing to implement the Jan Lokpal Bill in Delhi Assembly.

After announcing the participation of AAP in Lok Sabha Elections 2014, he announced that he would contest against BJP’s Prime Ministerial Candidate Narendra Modi from Varanasi. With his stunts, he became one of the most famous politicians overnight and gained immense popularity. He became the fifth most mentioned Indian politician on social networking sites.
